Hello, *|LIST:NAME|*

Welcome to the 3rd SmartGems Newsletter. The project has seen many fantastic achievements over the last 6 months and we are proud to share them with you. This newsletter gives us the opportunity to look at the innovative future prospects as well as being able to look over the project so far and all that has been achieved....

Project Progress so far?
SmartGems participated in the Sustainability and Energy in Buildings (SEB17) conference. This is a major international conference organised by a partnership made up of KES International and the EBERE Research Group at the Cardiff School of Art and Design Cardiff Metropolitan University, supported by the Technical University of Crete Kounoupidiana, Greece. SEB-17 invited contributions on a range of topics related to sustainable and smart buildings, renewable energy and smart technology, and explored innovative themes regarding intelligent buildings and smart cities. Professor Kolokotsa presented a session on how smart grids will affect the Built Environment with an emphasis on the links between energy efficiency and Internet of Things.

Meet our latest secondments...
The SmartGems project has seen over 25 secondments carried out over the last 6 months in countries across Europe, these secondments have been fantastic in aiding the development and implementation of the project. Let's meet the secondments and take a look at the groundbreaking work they have been doing.

Below you can see an outline of where the secondments have been placed.
Secondments at TUC

It's a great occasion to be in touch with different teams and backgrounds...

Hello guys! I am Federica Fuligni from Exergy Ltd, carrying out my secondment at TUC. My secondment ran from 15th June – 15th July. I was in the Ember TUC research Lab

During my time here, my work was mainly focused on the dissemination activities work package. This was aimed at planning the Project Video with the support of the TUC team as co-ordinators of the SmartGems project. The team I worked with were all very nice and supportive, the Ember TUC lab is a research laboratory with different multidisciplinary expertise (Phd researchers, postgraduates, professors, etc) from Physics, Environmental Engineering and Architecture background. As the production of a video requires a deep understanding of the main dynamics and goals of the Project, an ongoing conversation with other main actors in the Project played a relevant role. The shooting session was an opportunity to be on stage and represent Exergy expertise and ambitions in SmartGEMS project. I would definitely recommend this experience as It’s a great occasion to come in touch with different teams and build knowledge based on different expertise and backgrounds, either scientifically technical as well as related to the requirements of video-production.

In the short period of time we gained good insights that are important for our activities...

Greetings, I am Pietro from IDEA. I carried out my secondment at Technical University Crete from 12th May – 12th June. I worked under the School of Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete.

The work carried out during my secondment was focused firstly on studying the experiences carried out by TUC in terms of monitoring and controlling the ambient condition of the buildings in order to achieve a better use of the energy (less consumption) and better living quality of people that stay and work in the offices. There were sensors installed in the building that communicate all data to data collectors, called Multi-Purpose Management device (MPM). All data is then sent to a device, which collects them and can control the HVAC and partially the illumination, in terms of number of artificial light sources per room.

The goal of the secondment was to collect information about hardware, software and techniques used for consumption prediction in order to develop a monitoring sensor network system for buildings connected to a poly generative solar system able to produce electricity, cooling and thermal energy.

Predictions of the energy needs are crucial in developing a smart grid connection of energy production according to the kind of end user requests and environmental condition. During my time here I worked with a fantastic team that were friendly but also very professional. They were able to support me in every aspect of the secondment giving all assistance needed. I recommend this experience because in the short period of time people at TUC have given us very good insights regarding themes that are very important for our activities.
Secondments at Elgama-Elektronika

I would recommend this experience because of the industrial exposure and social awareness...

Hello all, I am Emmanuel from Brunel University London. I carried out my secondment at Elgama-Elektronika Ltd from 15th July – 15th August. Elgama-Elektronika ltd is a leading manufacturer in smart meters in Baltic region. “The company develops and produces the whole range of devices for electricity measurement, control and management applied in residential, commercial and industrial sectors”

My secondment involved Mathematical Design Modeling of a Flickermeter - this is an algorithm based device to be embedded in Elgama G3G smart meters, with the objective of measuring voltage which is associated with power disruptions, malfunctioning or damage of connected equipment etc, which can pose potential health risks depending the severity and duration.

I would recommend this international secondment experience because of the practical industrial exposure, and knowledge sharing advantage that has been of benefit to me in terms of new knowledge acquisition, and other skills such as social/cultural awareness, communication, and management.

Keep connected to learn more about our other secondments and don't forget to connect with us on Social Media...
